Fleur had married Alain, Comte de Treville, because she loved him. Not because he was blind and she felt sorry for him, or because she cared only for his money and his title, as he suspected. Nevertheless, Alain needed a wife to look after him, and Fleur went into marriage on a business basis only, hoping that eventually he would come to trust and care for her.

Fleur's father, a vicar, meets Alain while he is visiting the hospital. Alain is over in England for one more try on regaining his sight. He was blinded by acid in his lab 2 years ago and has had several operations.The doctor doesn't want to operate because Alain is so bitter, he thinks an operation will be futile. The vicar can't get through to him, so he enlists his daughter's help. She visits him and it helps. Alain is mean to her but starts to be nice to everyone else. Then he develops a complication and can't have the operation for a year. Fleur marries him and goes with him to France.
