انتقلت جولي من بلدتها في داكوتا الجنوبية حيث أكملت دراستها الجامعية الى لويزيانا بحثاً عن جذورها في ما اعتقدت انها منطقة أحد أسلافها القدامى ولدى وصولها ومباشرتها البحث عما جاءت من أجله, تفاجئها, في غابة كثيفة عينان سرعان ما تقع أسيرتهما... عينا رجل يدعى ستيف ...
يتحول أسرها فيهما قصة حب هادرة بالثقة والغيرة, بالفرح والشقاء, بالمتعة والعذاب. وفي اطار هذه القصة الجارحة يبدو على ستيف أنه لا يبالي, اذ كانت هناك فتاة أخرى ظنت جولي انها تشاركها الرجل الذي اعتبرته مرفأ لسفينة عذابها وتقرر جولي العودة من رحلتها في موقف مشحون بالانهيار. وتعود هاربة, لكن الى أين؟

الكبرياء قناع بامكانه ان يحجب الحب أو يحوله الى كراهية وصدّ... ولعلّ اختلاف الطبائع والأطباعبين البشر يدفع أحيانا ببعضهم الى التمسك بكبريائه حتى آخر لحظة, ودومني الانكليزية التي تزوجت اليوناني بول لم تقبل يوما واقعها, وبرغم الحياة الفريدة التي أعطيت لها على طبق من ذهب بقيت وشانج قلبها متعلقة بشاطئ بلدها... وبذلك الرسام الشاب الذي خطف لبّها بحديثه وطموحه، وركض معها على الرمال الرطبة... وتلتقيه في الجزيرة اليونانية بعد سنوات... فهل تهرب معه كما يريدها أن تفعل, أو تبقى وفية لذلك النمر اليوناني بول ستيفانوس؟

هل يعرف الإبن أمه ولو لم يشاهدها منذ ولادته؟ وهل تحن عروق البنت الى والدها ولو انه هجر امها قبل ان ترى النور؟ سؤال تجيب عنه هذه الرواية في سباق لا مثيل له تجلت خلاله صراحة الأطفال وتعقيدات الكبار .لقد أخطأت راشيل مرة في حياتها. ومن لا يخطيء لا يكون بشراً, الا انها حملت توبتها وراحت تحاول الابتعاد عن أجواء... تلك الليلة, لكن القدر رفض ان يتركها تفعل و وقف في وجهها وقوف الصخر بوجه الامواج. لكن ماذا يريد هذا الرسام البوهيمي الذي يكره الزواج والاطفال؟ وهل يأخذ منها كل شيء بعدما اذلها سنوات طويلة؟
