Rule #1: Cops maintain their distance.

It was just supposed to be your average stakeout. My partner and I would scope out both the coffee shop and Laurel Wilkins, the latest target of con man Trevor Dean's scheme to meet women online and bilk them of their money-and everything else. So I went inside to get a better look. So she happened to be gorgeous with a body that made me temporarily forget how to order coffee. So she knew my name-Russ Evans-and hugged me like we were more than friends. So what the $#@ is going on?

Rule #2: Cops think fast on their feet.
If she's Trevor's accomplice, and her job is to distract me with sex, it's working. But my gut's saying no-this lady is so innocent and sweet and totally unexpected, she's a con artist's dream of a mark. The only explanation is that Dean used my name to lure Laurel, and now this unbelievably desirable woman has shown up expecting to share a lot more than frothy cappuccinos. Okay-cold shower time. Think kittens in distress, Evans. Get it under control.

Rule #3: Cops never, ever get involved.
Never underestimate the power of a woman embarrassed in a coffee shop. Laurel's determined to keep that scum from doing this to other women, even if it means offering herself up as bait. I've got to figure out a way to keep her safe--and keep my hands off, no matter how mutual the attraction might be. Anything else would be insane. Against the rules.
