لم تفهم فانيسا شيئاً مما جرى حاولت تخليص ذراعها من قبضة الرجل، وللحظة لم تعرف أن كان صديقاً أم عدواً.
ورمقته بنظرة تحمل كل رعب الدنيا، فهم الرجل وقال موضحاً : عمك مات اثر نوبة قلبية يا آنسة كارول. الرصاصة التي سمعتها اطلقتها على شبح كان يتحرك في الخارج" على الرغم من تصديق فانيسا قوله الا أنها بقيت جامدة مكانها.
اقترب منها الرجل وهمس بلغته الغربية : التمرد اخذ طريق الثأر الأعمى، عليك قبول مساعدتي ياآنسة سواء رضيت بذلك أم لم ترضي.

ربما كان معظم عذاب المحبين, هو انهم لا ينالون ما يتمنونه...وهذا ببساطة ما حدث لداليا الفتاة الرقيقة البريئة التي وقعت في حب الرجل الذي أنقذ حياتها, والذي خطب أختها فيما بعد ... انه حقاً شخص مختلف وغريب... ترك كل شيء وراءه وغادر إالى أفريقيا الجنوبية. ..

دائما يرتبط الحب بالجمال. دائماً يكون العاشق شبيهاً بادونيس والعاشقة شقيقة عشتار. الا ان هذه القاعدة، ككل قاعدة لها شواذها. ورافينا التي أحبت رودري الجميل ما لبثت أن وجدت نفسها حيال رجل محروق الوجه واليدين , يطارده ماضيه كالظل، وفي أرجاء قصره المنيع في سيردينيا وقعت أسيرة ذلك الماضي وتلك "الحروق"... فهل تبقى هناك وهل يطل الورد من غابة الشوك ؟

الكبرياء قناع بامكانه ان يحجب الحب أو يحوله الى كراهية وصدّ... ولعلّ اختلاف الطبائع والأطباع بين البشر يدفع أحيانا ببعضهم الى التمسك بكبريائه حتى آخر لحظة, ودومني الانكليزية التي تزوجت اليوناني بول لم تقبل يوما واقعها, وبرغم الحياة الفريدة التي أعطيت لها على طبق من ذهب بقيت وشانج قلبها متعلقة بشاطئ بلدها... وبذلك الرسام الشاب الذي خطف لبّها بحديثه وطموحه، وركض معها على الرمال الرطبة... وتلتقيه في الجزيرة اليونانية بعد سنوات... فهل تهرب معه كما يريدها أن تفعل, أو تبقى وفية لذلك النمر اليوناني بول ستيفانوس؟

تحركت عيناها البنفسجيتان بسرعة متجولة على وجهه وبرغم انها لم تشعر بانفراجه ضوء مفاجئة تبدد العتمة التي دخلت فيها منذ فقدت ذاكرتها, الا انها شعرت فجأة انها متأكدة من صحة ما قاله آفري. فمنذ لقاءهما اول مرة في تشيز، ربطت في عقلها الباطن بين روبرت وبين ما تحاول الفرار منه ويخيفها لانها كانت تعلم طوال الوقت ان شيئاً ما فيه قد يهز ذاكرتها و يعيدها من المكان المسدود الذي دخلت فيه او الملجأ الذي لجأت اليه لتهرب من ذكريات شيء ما تجهله. هي : ممثلة مسرحية فقدت ذاكرتها. هو: ممثل مسرحي معروف, ساخر وحاد الطباع. وبينهما عائلة كبيرة تحمل اسم منطقة بكاملها, لكن الشريدة هل تمنح قلبها للطبيب الذي انقذها ام للممثل الذي شك في حقيقة امرها ؟

It annoyed Doctor Avery Chase to hear his cousin Robert denounce as a phoney the frightened young girl found late one night sitting on the doorstep of Chase, the family home on the edge of the Devon moors.
But Robert was convinced that the girl who said she thought her name was Lygia was acting the part of a person who had lost her memory just to see what she could get out of the wealthy Avery.
Lygia was tormented by her inability to remember, but the sole clue to her identity seemed to be the mark of a ring on the third finger of her left hand; a mark which Lygia noted with some misgiving.
